- Koh Phangan is the closest big island to Samui, roughly thirty minutes by boat from the north coast, so even a half day leaves real time on the beaches.
- The best of the day is the quiet bays on the north and east coast, where roads are steep, rough or missing and a boat simply drops anchor.
- The cheapest private full day listed is Anda at ฿30,000 for up to 6 guests, and Pearl, the most booked speedboat, runs 8 hours around Koh Phangan for ฿38,000 with hotel transfer included.
- Coco Cay and Summer Casa offer a 4-hour version for ฿43,000.
- Catamarans for Koh Phangan include Vickey (฿35,000), Scarlet (from ฿47,900), Blue Coco (฿62,000) and Coco Paradise (฿75,000).
From the north coast of Koh Samui you can see Koh Phangan on a clear morning: a long green ridge across the water, close enough to feel like you could swim there. Most people visit it by ferry and taxi, see one beach and a lot of road. A private Koh Phangan boat trip from Samui turns it around: you skip the road and see the coast the way the island looks best, from the water.
This guide covers how the day works, which bays are worth the anchor, where to snorkel and which boats in the list actually run Koh Phangan routes. I will also tell you who should skip it and go somewhere else.
How does a Koh Phangan boat trip from Samui work?
You charter the whole boat with captain and crew, leave from Koh Samui in the morning and spend the day hopping between bays, snorkelling spots and beaches along the Koh Phangan coast. The crossing is short: Koh Phangan is roughly thirty minutes away from the north of Samui, so most of the day is spent at anchor, not in transit.
Koh Phangan is the largest of Samui's neighbouring islands, at about 168 sq km. Over three-quarters of it is mountainous tropical forest, and much of it is protected as national park land. That is exactly why the coast stays wild: the hills push the roads inland, and many bays sit at the end of steep tracks or none at all.
Most boats for this route are moored on the north side of Koh Samui, which is the short side for Phangan. Anda, Neverland, Ofcourse, Sapphire and Ti Ti start there. Coco Cay and Summer Casa leave from the Naval Base. Some boats include hotel transfer (Anda, Pearl, Ruby 38, Scarlet) and others do not, so factor that in when comparing.
The route itself is flexible. On a private boat the captain plans the stops around the wind and the sea that day, and you can say "more snorkelling, less beach" or the opposite. That flexibility is the real reason to go private rather than on a shared tour.
Which Koh Phangan beaches are easiest to reach by boat?
The quiet bays of the north and east coasts are the ones a boat does best. Roads on Koh Phangan change and some tracks get improved, but several of these beaches are still a steep, slow or bumpy ride by land, and a few have no proper road at all.
From the sea, these bays are simply a matter of dropping anchor and swimming in. Here are the ones guests ask about most:
- Bottle Beach (Haad Khuad): a wide, quiet bay on the north coast, backed by jungle hills. For years the classic way in has been by boat, and it still feels far from everything.
- Than Sadet: a small east-coast bay with a stream and waterfall behind it. Thai kings visited the waterfall in the past, and the rocks there still carry royal inscriptions.
- Haad Yuan and Haad Tien: two small bays just north of Haad Rin, between rocky headlands. By land they are known for rough tracks and jungle paths; by boat they take minutes.
- Thong Nai Pan: two curved bays in the north-east. You can drive there, but the view of the twin bays from the water is the one people photograph.
- The coast near Haad Rin: famous for the Full Moon Party, and by day a regular beach. Passing by boat is a good way to see it without the crowds.
Not every boat will reach every bay in one day. The east coast is the more exposed side, and in a north-east wind the captain may keep you on the sheltered west and north instead. Ask for two or three favourites and let the captain fit them to the weather.
My honest advice: do not try to tick off six beaches. Two or three proper stops with time to swim, walk and sit in the shade make a far better day than a list of quick photo stops.
Where is the snorkelling good around Koh Phangan?
The best-known snorkelling stop is Koh Ma, a small island off the north-west coast joined to Koh Phangan by a sandbar at low tide. The bay is sheltered, which makes it good for all levels, from first-timers in life jackets to confident swimmers.
Koh Ma is the stop most Phangan boat days are built around. Boats from the north of Samui typically cross, drop anchor in the bay and give you time to snorkel over the coral before moving on. Coral and visibility vary with the season and the weather, so treat the day as a beach and snorkel day rather than a guaranteed dive-quality reef.
Snorkelling equipment or masks are included on most boats in the list. Anda also lists fins. Coco Cay and Summer Casa include a paddle board, and Scarlet has 2 paddle boards plus kayaks, so a calm bay becomes a small water playground.
If snorkelling is the main goal of your trip and you have a full day, also look at Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, which are known for clearer water and better reefs, though the crossing is much longer. For a relaxed day with good, easy snorkelling, Koh Phangan is the better balance.
What does a full day around Koh Phangan look like?
A typical full day is a morning crossing, a long snorkel stop, a beach and lunch in the middle of the day, one or two quieter bays in the afternoon and a return to Samui in the late afternoon. The exact order depends on the captain and the sea.
Timings depend on the boat. Blue Coco and Coco Paradise run their Koh Phangan full day from 09:00 to 17:00, Vickey from 10:00 to 18:30, and Scarlet offers 6 hours (09:00-15:00 or 12:30-18:30) or 8 hours (10:30-18:30). The speedboats run 8-hour days.
Lunch works in different ways, so check the lunch line on the boat page before you go. Scarlet serves a Thai lunch on its 6- and 8-hour trips. Coco Cay and Summer Casa include a beach picnic, and Blue Coco sets up a beach picnic with afternoon tea. On Anda, Neverland, Ofcourse, Sapphire and Ti Ti, lunch is an extra charge, and some groups prefer a simple beach restaurant in one of the bays.
On several catamarans, including Vickey, Scarlet and Blue Coco, you can bring your own snacks, food and drinks free of charge, and glasses and dishes are on board. For a birthday or a family day that is a nice way to keep it personal: a cake from your favourite bakery, fruit from the market, your own drinks.
Which boats run Koh Phangan routes, and how do they compare?
Most of the boats in the list have a Koh Phangan route, from speedboats to catamarans and motor yachts. Prices are for the whole boat, and the base group varies, so read the "base group" column as carefully as the price.
| Boat | Type | Koh Phangan route | Price | Base group / max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anda | Speedboat | 8 hours | ฿30,000 | 6 / 12 |
| Vickey | Catamaran | Full day 10:00-18:30 | ฿35,000 | 6 / 10 |
| Pearl | Speedboat | Around Koh Phangan, 8 hours | ฿38,000 | 6 / 15 |
| Ofcourse, Sapphire, Ti Ti | Speedboat | 8 hours | ฿40,000 | 6 / 24 |
| Ruby 38 | Speedboat | Around Koh Phangan, 8 hours | ฿40,000 | 6 / 8 |
| Coco Cay, Summer Casa | Speedboat | 4 hours / 8 hours | ฿43,000 / ฿53,000 | 2 / 10 |
| Neverland | Speedboat | 8 hours | ฿47,000 | 10 / 37 |
| Scarlet | Catamaran | 6 hours / 8 hours | ฿47,900 / ฿52,000 | 8 / 20 |
| Blue Coco | Catamaran | Full day 09:00-17:00 | ฿62,000 | 10 / 25 |
| Coco Paradise | Catamaran | Full day 09:00-17:00 | ฿75,000 | 10 / 45 |
| Serenity | Catamaran | 8 hours | ฿100,000 | 25 / 60 |
Not every catamaran goes to Koh Phangan: Nina and Victoria run their trips to Koh Tan and Koh Madsum (Pig Island) instead. Motor yachts such as Princess 42 and Lisa also offer Koh Phangan days at higher prices; they are a different, more premium kind of trip.
A few things the table does not show. Extra guests above the base group cost ฿1,000 each on Anda, Neverland, Ofcourse, Sapphire and Ti Ti, ฿2,000 on Pearl, Ruby 38, Coco Cay and Summer Casa, ฿1,300 on Vickey, ฿1,500 on Scarlet and Coco Paradise and ฿1,200 on Blue Coco. The Koh Phangan charter page lists every boat with its full route details.
If I had to pick one boat for a first Koh Phangan day, it would be Pearl, and it is the speedboat guests book most often. The 12 m (38 ft) boat with two 200 hp Suzuki engines runs an 8-hour loop around Koh Phangan for ฿38,000, takes up to 15 guests, and includes hotel transfer, a guide, snorkelling masks, soft drinks, water, fruit and snacks. Lunch is not included, which suits a stop at a beach restaurant in one of the bays. The Pearl speedboat page has the full details.
For a mid-size group comparing speedboats, Pearl suits 7 to 15 people who want transfer and snacks sorted at a fair price, Ruby 38 a group of up to 8, and Ofcourse a larger group of up to 24.
Speedboat or catamaran, half day or full day: which fits your group?
A speedboat suits groups who want more bays and more time in the water; a catamaran suits families and groups who want space, shade and a slower day. For Koh Phangan both work well, because the crossing is short.
On a speedboat you cover more coast in the same 8 hours, and you can reach the far side of the island without spending the afternoon in transit. The downside is the ride: in a choppy sea a speedboat bounces, and a long crossing on a windy day is not fun for anyone prone to seasickness. The speedboat charter page shows all the fast options.
On a catamaran, two hulls keep the boat steady at anchor, and there is a saloon and a covered deck for shade. Scarlet has 3 bedrooms and 2 restrooms, Blue Coco has a bathroom in each of its 3 cabins, and Vickey is a smaller, simpler catamaran for up to 10 guests. The catamaran page lists them all.
A 4-hour Koh Phangan trip is only worth it if you keep the plan small. Coco Cay and Summer Casa run it for ฿43,000 for 2 people: enough for a crossing, one bay and a swim, but not for the far side of the island. For a first visit, take the full day.
A quick match: Anda suits a small group that wants the most affordable speedboat day, Vickey a family or a few friends on a relaxed catamaran budget, Scarlet a group that wants lunch, a slide and restrooms on board, and Neverland a big group that wants to stay together on one fast boat.
When is the sea calm enough for Koh Phangan?
For much of the year the Koh Phangan crossing is easy. The exception is roughly November to January, when the north-east monsoon can make the Gulf of Thailand rough, especially on the east coast of Phangan.
In that period the captain may switch to the sheltered side of the island, shorten the day or move the trip to another date. Weather decides the route on the day, not the booking form. If you are on the island at that time, keep a backup date in your plan.
The rest of the year, mornings are often the calmest part of the day, so an early start pays off. The sun is the bigger issue: there is not much shade on a beach in the middle of the day, so bring a hat, reef-friendly sunscreen and a long-sleeve top for snorkelling.
If you are prone to seasickness, choose a catamaran, sit in the middle of the boat during the crossing and look at the horizon. With the short crossing to Koh Phangan, most people are fine.
Before you book: a short checklist
A booking request for a Koh Phangan day takes a few minutes, and it is free and non-binding: a manager checks that the boat is free and confirms the final price before anything is paid.
- Date and a backup date, especially between November and January.
- Number of guests and children's ages, since the base group and child prices differ by boat.
- Half day or full day, and two or three bays you would most like to see.
- Lunch plan: included, extra charge, picnic or your own food.
- Pickup: hotel transfer included, or the pier or Naval Base on your own.
- Must-haves: toilet, shade, paddle boards, a slide or snorkelling for beginners.
Send the request through the booking form on the boat page or use the contact page or WhatsApp if you want help choosing. Tell the manager what kind of day you have in mind, and the right boat usually becomes obvious.
Questions and answers
Can we stop at the Full Moon Party beach by boat?
Haad Rin is on the southern tip of Koh Phangan, and passing by or stopping there is something to discuss with the manager and the captain when you book. By day it is a regular beach. A day charter returns to Samui in the late afternoon, so it is not a way to attend the party itself.
Is a Koh Phangan boat trip good for non-swimmers?
Yes, if you pick the right stops. Sheltered bays such as Koh Ma suit beginners, life jackets are on board, and a catamaran gives non-swimmers plenty of space to relax while others snorkel.
Do we pay a national park or island fee on Koh Phangan?
The boat pages list entrance fees for Ang Thong, Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Madsum and Koh Rap, but none for the Koh Phangan routes. If your plan includes a special stop, ask the manager to confirm when you book.
Can we combine Koh Phangan and Ang Thong in one day?
The boats in the list run them as separate routes. Ang Thong is a full day on its own, and it is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December each year.
Will we see dolphins on the way to Koh Phangan?
It can happen in the Gulf of Thailand, but it is never guaranteed. Treat any sighting as a bonus rather than a reason to book this route.
Is the 4-hour trip enough to see Koh Phangan?
It is enough for a crossing, one good bay and a swim, not for a tour of the coast. For a first visit, a full day lets you see the quieter bays on the far side of the island.
Can we bring alcohol on board?
On several catamarans, including Vickey, Scarlet and Blue Coco, you can bring your own food and drinks free of charge, and glasses are provided. On other boats, ask the manager when you send the request.
Which speedboat is best value for a group around Koh Phangan?
Pearl is the most booked choice: ฿38,000 for 8 hours around Koh Phangan for up to 6 guests, ฿2,000 for each extra guest up to 15, with hotel transfer, snacks, soft drinks and snorkelling masks included.
